Praia do Matadouro is mainly a surf beach. It’s a good spot for beginner surfers, and plenty of surf schools use Praia do Matadouro as their go-to spot. If you want to join in on the fun but don’t have your own board, there is board rental next to the Board riders shop just above the beach. Due to the rocky bottom, it’s a good idea to go and check out the beach during low tide, to get a sense of the beach before you go surfing.
The beach as well as the surf break consists of a combination of sand and rocks, with some rocks sticking up. So its better to bring your rubber boots if you-re in doubt. The A-frame peaks can be a lot of fun when the swell is around 1.5 meter.
Sunbathing at Praia do Matadouro
Unfortunately high tide can swallow up most of the beach, so make sure you check the tide if you want to go here for sunbathing. It’s not the best beach for lounging, since the space is very limited and rocky. But especially at low tide there is a lot of marine life to explore. It’s a great place to take your children to teach them about the ocean and watch the fisherman to see if they manage to catch something.

Above the beach there is a small food truck with cozy beach view seating. Among other things; espresso, inexpensive beers, hot dogs, and various salads are on the menu.
Don’t forget to stroll up to Board riders to stock up on board shorts and wax. Finishing of the day with a sunset cider from the wooden deck of Boarriders is a great ending of any day in Ericeira.
