São Julião

Ericeira Insider's Beaches in Ericeira Series - Everything about the Different Beaches in Ericeira

Rumors has it that this is Madonna’s favorite beach and it’s easy to understand why. São Julião radiates with unspoiled raw beauty. The dramatic cliffs loom over the deep blue ocean and waves crash against fine sand.

One of the Least Crowded Beaches in Ericeira

At low tide the beach stretches for a couple of kilometers towards the south, perfect for a solitude beach walk or a run.  São Julião it located a 15-minute drive away from Ericeira, so it’s usually less people and less surfers present. In the off season it’s easy to find a private spot.

Another good reason for coming here is that the beach offers better wind protection than other beaches around.

You can park up on the cliffs or down in the valley. The beach has one shower, but its only working in the summertime. Unfortunately there are no free bathrooms, but just order something up at the cafe.

In the wintertime be aware of the current. If the waves are big, swimming might not be the best idea. In the summertime there are lifeguards and a marked area for swimming.

Food at São Juliao

There are two cafés to choose from. One of the cafés is up on the cliff, overlooking the beach. From here you have a nice view over the waves. There are chairs and tables both inside and outside.

The staff are friendly, so don’t be shy to try out your Portuguese when you order a bica and a Bolo de berlim. This cafe is a perfect place to bring a book and let hours pass by looking at the ocean. Just order a grilled sandwich and an Imperal when you get hungry.

Right on the beach there is another cafe, perfect for an ice cream break. This cafe is only open in the summer.

If you want to be alone with the ocean São Julião is one of your best bet. In the summertime you might not be alone, but you definitely have more space. This is particularly true at low tide.

Visit São Julião and explore Ericeira’s longest stretch of beach.
