What is Selina Ericera?
Selina is a hostel chain that started out in Central America. On top of being just a hostel they target digital nomads and present themselves as a coliving/coworking option. Selina’s first hostel in Portugal opened up in Lisbon. And in the summer 2019 they opened up their Ericeira branch; Selina Ericeira.
A Beautifully Designed Hostel
Selina started on a beach in South America and that happy, laid back vibe is well presented in Selina’s Ericeira branch. The decoration is really top notch. It is stylish and modern while at the same time giving you a homely vibe. Besides being beautifully decorated it also has a small pool with sunbeds overlooking the town and the ocean. And the poolside is a great place for enjoying Ericeira and its beautiful sunset. Especially during the DJ set by the pool that’s happening most Saturdays, starting at 4.
Community Vibes at Selina Ericeira
Selina is more than just a hostel. They strive to build a community, in Ericeira as well as around the world. Sintra-trips, surf lessons and a daily welcome drink is all part of their offering.
Every day there is a free wellness activity going on at the rooftop, usually Yoga or Pilates. They also offer surf skate classes and climbing tours.
The cozy common areas of the hostel are perfect for mingling and connecting with like-minded people. Thus even if you arrive alone and despite that Selina is a big hostel chain, it will most likely be easy to find a lot of new friends.
There is an on-site restaurant in Selina. Their concept is still being developed. At the moment they only have a limited menu; Açai bowls, avocado toast and my personal favourite, their Bae pancakes. Note that the brunch is served all day, until 16:00.
However, if you prefer to make your own food, there is also a shared kitchen.
The location of Selina Ericeira
The location of Selina, right in the center of town, is both the biggest asset and a bit of a downfall. You of course have great access to everything that the city center of Ericeira has to offer. Amazing restaurants and a vibrant nightlife with lots of potential for Bar-hopping are just a block away. There are also several supermarkets close by.
All this can of course be a bit too much if you need your holiday with a side dish of peace and quiet. Also worth noting is that Selina is located on one of the most well trafficked streets in Ericeira.
Potential Flaws of Selina Ericeira
Selina is a relatively big hostel, but the common areas are a bit on the small side for the number of guests they accept.
As they do have two 20 bed dorms, it can get very busy in the summertime. So be prepared to mingle. Especially if you use the kitchen.
The place can also be a bit on the noisy side as the isolation between the different areas could have been better. There is usually something going on and the vibe is fun and young.
Value for Money
Spontaneously staying just one night in Selina’s 20 bed dorm will set you back around 50 euro. So it it by no means cheap. But if you plan ahead you can get a better deal.
The prices is much lower if you book a couple of months in advance. The also have a lot of promotions, sign up for Selina’s loyalty program if you like the concept.
Since they raised their prices the occupancy is less and there are more space for the people who do choose to stay in Selina.
In the off-season it’s a real treat in terms of making new friends and enjoying all the beautiful facilities.
Who Is Selina for?
As everything isn’t for everyone, Selina’s aim to target everyone unfortunately falls a bit short. Catering to the party crowd as well as the working crowd will not go without friction. Thus if you are a digital nomad who want to get a lot of work done, we wouldn’t recommend Selina for you. Instead we recommend you to have a look at our post on coworking and coliving in Ericeira.
However, if you’re not in full on work mode, want to stay at a beautiful place that’s centrally located, meet people and have a lot of fun. Then Selina Ericeira is the place for you.
