Uni Sushi -The oldest

Uni sushi is a classic in Ericeira’s restaurant scene and according to the rumor one of the oldest sushi restaurants in Portugal. Many people also claim that Uni Sushi serves the best sushi in Ericeira.

Uni Sushi is exactly what you would expect from a sushi restaurant. The interior design is white and clean with some oriental details. The clientele is slightly younger and trendier than what you see in the other restaurants in Ericeira. The atmosphere is fun, with a view of the sushi chefs chopping away and preparing the plates.

Uni Sushi is usually full, so make a reservation or show up earlier in the evening. The outside tables are particularly popular and good for people watching. Miyabi Sushi by Rodrigo Mattos - The Most Ambitious Sushi in Ericeira

miyabi sushi

When someone put their name on a restaurant you know you’re in for a treat, or possibly a taste of someone’s delusion of grandeur. So when Miyabi Sushi by Rodrigo Mattos opened in Ericeira we were eager to try the new restaurant.

The restaurant is close to the center of Ericeira, located on top of another restaurant, just follow the signs that says Sushi. The space is clean and understated, as you would expect from a more upscale sushi restaurant. If the weather allows the best spot are on their small terrace. You can eat sushi while watching the Ericeira street life from above.

Miyabi Sushi by Rodrigo Mattos is good for a romantic dinner or a gathering with friends

Judging by the line of people hoping for a table during weekends, there was a need for a more extravagant sushi restaurant in Ericeira. You need to book in advance.

You can either choose the all-you-can-eat sushi buffet for 22.90 or an assortment of sushi from the a la carte menu.

Miyabi Sushi by Rodrigo Mattos serves high quality sushi, very nicely presented and a lot of people consider this to be the best sushi in Ericeira. Other people take a more skeptical view and claim that the sushi, although being good, is not so great as you would expect for the price. We also heard some reports about the service being slow and disorganized.

When we went there the plates where very appealing, and the fish was delicious and fresh. On the expensive side, but a nice treat.

Miyabi Sushi by Rodrigo Mattos is worth it if you have some extra cash to burn through and are a sushi fan.

Hayaci Sushi – For the hungry

If you had an intense 3-hour surf session and wonder how to get back all the lost calories we recommend Hayaci Sushi. They serve a sushi buffet, modestly priced at 10.90 for lunch and 14.90 for dinner. For this prize you can eat as much as you want. You even get ice cream or fruit for dessert.

What makes Hayaci sushi particularly good is that the sushi is made to order. You have an extensive menu and you write down the number of the dish you want on a note pad. The chefs will then make the sushi and serve it to you. Hayaci sushi is also very fast and effective, in no-time you will have a big tray of sushi in front of you. Perfect for when you are already starving when entering the restaurant.

Hayaci Sushi Plating

The sushi is great, especially considering the price. Among our favorites are the flamed salmon sushi, the sushi with tofu, and the uramki avocado. They also offer sashimi.

And when you had enough of the sushi, the menu also includes a lot of warm dishes. Such as vegetables tempura, spring rolls and shrimp skewers.

There are vegetarian options so the restaurant would work for a vegetarian, just with less things to choose from.

The drinks are equally well priced, and the waiters are attentive and sweet. Since it’s a relatively big restaurant it’s easy to get a table. Hayaci is a good choice when all the other restaurants are full or when you are a big group of people. The restaurant itself is not cozy. It is a little bit away from the main square but close to the Capela de São Sebastião

Hayaci Sushi also do a great affordable take-away if you want to enjoy your sushi outside. Just pick a seaside location, and look at the waves while you dig in on fried futo maki.

Of course you can’t expect the same level of sushi-sophistication you would get from an a la carte menu in Hayaci. But it’s a lot of fun to have so many choices. The chefs at Hayaci sushi do an excellent job. And you’ll get to taste a lot of different dishes that will leave you full and satisfied.

Mish-Mish – Most popular among locals

The interior design is not anything that would impress a décor savvy person. Just a lot of plastic bamboo and boring wooden tables. The location is central, but close to the main road, so there is no cozy old town atmosphere to watch while you eat your maki.

Still, on a weekend its usually a line of people waiting for a table outside, the sushi is that good. Or rather that good and plentiful for a fair price. Mish-Mish is particularly popular with the Portuguese, the restaurant started in Malveira and after the success there they opened a branch in Ericeira.

Mish-Mish has an a-la carte menu as well as an all you can eat buffet. Most people visit the restaurant for the all you can eat buffet. The price is 16.90 for dinner and 13.90 for lunch on weekdays. Note that not everything on the a la carte menu is part of the sushi buffet.

But there is no risk of leaving hungry. The menu is extensive with lots of sushi, sashimi and hot dishes to choose from.

Since its so popular they are definitely doing something right, and the quality of the fish is slightly higher than Hayaci Sushi. But a lot of people feel that the sushi in Mish-Mish comes with to much sauce. (Not a common problem in Portugal) And by sauce they mean too much crème cheese, too much mayonnaise and too much sweet chili sauce.

However, Mish-Mish is one of the most popular sushi restaurants in Ericeira. So if you are a sushi fan or just very hungry pay them a visit and decide for yourself.

Na Onda – The Best View

If you want your sushi with a beach view head over to Foz do Lizandro. The beach itself is stunning, well worth a visit. Na Onda is the name both of the surf school and the restaurant. This is the place if you want to watch the sunset and have a Caipirinha with your California rolls. The decoration is typical beach-bar style, so nothing to write home about.

The restaurant offers both sushi as well as crowd pleasing food such as burgers and pizzas. So if you are with someone who doesn’t fancy sushi this is the place to go. The kitchens are completely divided, and the chefs making sushi has a lunch serving and a dinner serving, thus you can’t have sushi at for example 4 o’clock. Make sure you check the opening hours before you head over. Also the dinner menu are more extensive then the lunch menu.

Having this said, the sushi chefs do a great job putting out Uramaki, Sashimi and Nigiris. There are a couple of combinations to choose from, try the Na Onda, 18 pieces for 14.90 or the combination of 55 sushi pieces for 2 people, at 34.90 euro. It will leave you full even after a surf session. The sushi is fresh and beautifully presented. The view ads just the right amount of glamour and joy. And when you have finished eating, kick of your shoes and go for a beach walk.
